A (Super) Senior Recital

As a candidate for a Bachelor of Arts in Music, I was required to complete a thesis project before graduation from Alma College. My project took the form of an hour-long recital for which I spent months preparing. On March 26th, 2006, friends, faculty and family joined me in the Oscar E. Remick Heritage Center for the Performing Arts as I presented an evening of clarinet literature composed by Willson Osborne, Paul Hindemith, Johann Stamitz, and Johannes Brahms.

For this event, several of my pieces required instrumental accompaniment. I was extremely fortunate to have Mr. Tony Patterson, a brilliant pianist and Alma College artist-in-residence, and Miss Ann Armbruster, a phenomenal student cellist, backing me on my big night. Short biographies of these incredible musicians were included in my recital program and have been reproduced below.

She has studied extensively with Ms. Susan Karnes and Mr. Patrick DeWitt and has performed such pieces as Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker and Haydn's The Creation with the Alma Symphony Orchestra. Miss Schaeffer has also led her section in the Kiltie Marching Band and Alma College Wind Ensemble since 2002 and is a proud member of the Alma College Chorale as well. She wishes to extend her deepest gratitude to those friends, faculty, and family members in the audience who have provided her with so much inspiration and cheer over the years.

She participated in the Pioneer High School Philharmonic Orchestra, Ann Arbor School for the Performing Arts Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Michigan Youth Symphony. She is now the principal cellist of the Alma Symphony Orchestra, where she was recently invited to perform the first movement of the Elgar Cello Concerto, and she is a member of the Alma College String Trio. In addition to performing, Ann enjoys being active on the educational scene in local youth orchestra programs and teaching privately. She is pursuing a degree in Music Education.

Anthony Patterson, pianist

As an artist-in-residence at Alma College, Tony Patterson has played an essential part in raising the bar for student achievement in every area of the Music Department. A great pianist who is equally at home in the classical and popular music worlds, Tony performs as a soloist and collaborative musician countless times each year. Acting as a coach/accompanist, he performs regularly with other professional musicians, accompanies Alma students in their recitals and public performances, works with students in preparation for jury exams, and adds many magical touches that make Alma Choir concerts sparkle.
